1. Anna, Nadja, Korinna, siblings who have just lost their mother, age 94

2. Alma (‘Canada’) and Dirk Braun, new neighbours in Berlin. Peter and Karlemann, four and five year old neighbours of the Brauns’. Aunt Marianne and Uncle Robert invited Anna to share their vacation Huck and Bobbie, vacation pests, Anna’s age.

3. Lilly, Emma, Lotte, Walla, Monika, 16 year old girls who have been drafted with Anna to serve in the Home Guards/ Hitler Youth division. Lt. Schmitt, ‘The Serge’, Cpl. Albers (the Medic), Cpl. Peters, Wehrmacht training and administration staff of the Stolpe unit. Motz, Eddie, Rainer, Ulli, Christian, Tom, Gustav, among the Berlin boys, aged 16, and Axel, Hansi, Henning, aged 14 to 16, among those from refugee camp. Toni, a recruit from Austria.

7. Foffie, Anna, Nadja and Korinna’s five year old brother, in 1945. Tatyana, their Ukrainian household help in Berlin, 1945.

11. Fritze, Picco, Klaus, 15, Hilla and Hermann, 21, members of the air-raid emergency units in downtown Berlin, Hitler Youth division.

16. Hilde, Eva, 15, and ‘the Pipsqueak’, 12, suburban members of the air-raid emergency units downtown.

17. ‘Edelweiss pirates’, a small group of young dissidents in Berlin.

18. Mrs. Schneider, Lotte’s mother, who bicycles to Stolpe field with a load of second-hand Hitler Youth uniform pieces, belts and boots.

19. Dr. Havemann, wounded war veteran, who works with his mother in her suburban neighbourhood clinic in Berlin, treats Hansi.

24. Lori, appears in 1961, Lilly’s five year old daughter.

26. Tina, Lilly’s three year old daughter. Baby Martin, Lilly’s son. Gunther, ‘the Parson’, Lilly’s husband, in a small parish in west Germany.

28. Uncle Heyn, one of the bravest people Anna will ever meet, and Anna, Nadja, Korinna, and Foffie’s neighbour, 1945.

29. Inge, Fritze’s wife, in Berlin, 2000.

31. Mrs. Heyn, Uncle Heyn’s wife, and their next door neighbour.

32. Frank Hornung, a local hobby historian and archivist, who responds to Anna’s ad seeking possible witnesses, and Helga Hornung,

37. Herbert Bender, and Markus Kleiber two musicians with the Berlin Staatsoper, who promise to be perfect gentlemen and who give Anna Shelter in the Berlin rubble, on May 1, 1945.

40. Uncle Wernig, a neighbour, returning from a British PoW camp in West Germany, who brings good news to Anna and her family.

41. Father, Phillip, whom they finally find safe, staying with relatives in West Germany.

42. Gerhard, and Charlie, Fireman and Engineer with the German railways, in Braunschweig in the Fall of 1945, running freights across the ‘green border’ to Berlin.

46. Werner and Lydia, East Berliners who have become Anna’s friends after the Berlin wall came down.
