Section 5, Chapter 6 -- Working with the future for prediction and planning: a mirror to memory
This chapter explores another bold hypothesis: that animals lower in the evolutionary chain are capable of and routinely utilize prediction and planning, i.e. work with the future.
- This hypothesis arose out of our account for imitation, where a description of the position of the instructor can lead to planning to achieve the same position.
- We shall explore this concept with a simple demo / example, as we did for imitation
- We shall explore how a predator might chase a prey with or without predicting the future.
- We shall lay out this scenario in simple diagrams, where each diagram represents a further step in time
This capability fits into our time-sequential, video-tape-like model of memory by hypothesizing a mirror-like extension of memory that represents future events
