2.2.2 The mechanics of turning: applying muscle power to rotate the foot relative to the hip

We now have to show how the muscles turn the leg. At this point we apply a major simplification by just showing a pair of muscles that control whether the leg and foot turns left or right relative to the hip.

Diagram 1: Muscles attached to the upper leg and to the hip - for turning the leg and foot right or left

We simplify the action by focusing on the hip joint, and by ignoring any muscles needed to keep the knee straight or to hold the ankle. We also ignore musles required for balancing, etc.
