Section 2, Chapter 2, Follow the footsteps: a simple action of turning left on the stage

We shall explore this action as a sequence of action fragments. Let us assume that the actor is standing straight, and now wants to turn left.

Diagram 1: Standing straight, hip straight, feet side by side - 90 degrees relative to the hip

  1. He puts all his weight on the right foot, so that the left foot is slightly lifted and free.
  2. He turns his left foot 30 degree turn to the left.
Diagram 2: hip straight, left foot turned 30 degrees counter-clockwise
  3. He then puts all his weight on the left foot, so that the right foot is slightly lifted and free.
  4. He then rotates his hip counter-clockwise about the left foot, so that the feet and the hip are at right angles again.
Diagram 3: The hip turned 30 degrees counter-clockwise, feet side by side - 90 degrees relative to the hip
  5. He then continues rotating his hip counter clockwise about the left foot, so that the left foot is turned 30 degrees clockwise toward the right foot. The right foot and the hip are still at right angles.
Diagram 4: The hip is turned 60 degrees counter-clockwise, and the left foot is 60 degrees relative to the hip
  6. He turns his right foot 30 degree to the left (counter-clockwise).
Diagram 5: The right foot is now 60 degrees relative to the hip, or 90 degrees relative to the original position
  7. He puts all his weight on the right foot, so that the left foot is slightly lifted and free.
  8. He turns the left foot 30 degrees to the left (counter-clockwise), to have it parallel to the right foot.
Diagram 6: The left foot is now 90 degrees relative to the hip, or straight
  9. He then rotates his hip counter-clockwise about the right foot, so that both feet and the hip are at right angles.
Diagram 7: The hip is now 90 degrees relative to the original position, and both feet are 90 degrees relative to the hip, or straight
  10. He then puts some of his weight back on the left foot, to evenly distribute his weight between the two feet.

At this point the actor has turned 90 degrees to the left.
